Enhanced Rider Bonus Certificate.
In November 2007, the DSA officially launched the Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS). Any rider who shows the required level of competency on training delivered by an RPMT will receive an Enhanced Rider Insurance Certificate (ERIC). Now renamed the Enhanced Rider Bonus Certificate.

The Enhanced Rider Scheme was launched with the full backing of the UK insurance industry. All the top motorcycle brokers operating in the UK are supporting it together with the insurers who actually issue the policies and cover the risk. As a result all riders who receive a Certificate following an assessment or course with a Registered Trainer benefit of significant insurance discounts. This discount is known as DSA Certificate of Competence - Enhanced Rider Bonus.
The commitment of the insurance industry and the value of their involvement in the ERS are significant. Under normal circumstances an insurer would be looking for an indication of the 'risk' benefit – some kind of measure of the likely impact on their exposure to claims. This would normally require a scheme to be up and running, and volumes and results available to analyse. However, in the case of the Enhanced Rider Scheme the industry has recognized the importance of this safety initiative, and the potential impact it could have on road casualty figures. By providing discounts they believe that they can help to encourage riders to consider their riding skills, and take an assessment and follow this up with any further training that may be required. Insurers and Brokers will also be working hard to get the message of post-test training to riders by including information in their communications and distributing leaflets with their mailings.
The discount scheme could not be more straight forward. A 'qualification' question is included in all quotation systems and a rider needs to simply state that they have earned a DSA Certificate of Competence - Enhanced Rider Bonus as a result of doing a course with a DSA Registered Post-Test Motorcycle Trainer and they will receive a GENUINE discount. Some Brokers will require a copy of the certificate as proof, but most will only need to see this in the case of a claim. The actual discount level will vary from Broker to Broker – the average is 10%. The discounts will apply with all renewals and new policies.
This is the first time that the UK insurance industry has responded as one to any Safety initiative and we are very grateful for their continued support.
